How To Renovate Older Butcher Block Countertops
Butcher block countertops are often frequently used and favored accessories in most kitchens. They are able to withstand intense heat and repeated abuse from sharp objects. They are also wonderful and convenient surfaces in which to prepare meats and vegetables on. Many butcher blocks that appear to be in terrible shape or disrepair in fact, just need to be refurbished with some common household items.
Gently, with a steel scraper, scrape the surface and marred areas of the butcher block. Remember that, to avoid deep gashes by rubbing with the grain of the block. Carefully wipe away the leftover wood shavings into a trash receptacle when you are all finished.
Next, fill up the sink or large tub with warm water mixed with mineral spirits. Soak the butcher block in the substance for several minutes, or simply anoint the counter top with it. After a few minutes, remove the butcher's block from the spirits or wipe away the excess fluid.
Carefully sand the butcher block's entire surface. While you're at it, periodically splash more of the mineral spirit over the counter top. The liquid will help to treat and smooth out the damaged surface of your butcher block. The mineral spirits, purchased at any grocery shop, will help maintain the block in prime working condition for many years ahead.
For particularly blackened and scorched spots, more in depth actions will have to be taken. With a small cotton ball, go over the spots in question with a tiny drop of bleach. Bleach can lighten up the scorched spots, making them less apparent. For really burned areas, a filler will have to be obtained to fill in the burned areas.
Lastly, several coats of mineral oils should be applied. The oil should be thoroughly heated in order to ensure that when it is applied it will be able to penetrate the block sufficiently. The oil will protect and preserve the butcher counter top's integrity. The oil itself can be obtained easily at almost any home decor or hardware store.
To avoid any future marring to the butcher block, be sure to treat it after each and every use. Knock all food pieces off and treat the surface everyday with a little bit of oil and warm water. Every couple days, soak or dab the whole block in a substance of soap and hot water too. Taking great care of the butcher block will lessen the likelihood of your needing to go through the hassle of restoring again it in the distant future.
