Updating Your Kitchen Cabinets Without Replacing Them
You might be surprised at how important kitchen cabinets are when it comes to the overall look of your kitchen. Unfortunately the designs and trends that were once in style don't last forever; neither does paint or stain. But if you don't have the cash, what can you do when your kitchen needs an update? Well, there are a few tricks to use to update your kitchen cabinet doors, and you don't have to spend a lot of cash to do it.
One of the easiest ways to update your cabinets is to just switch out your current door handles or knobs, which tend to quickly make cabinets look outdated or old. So you can replace them once in a while for just a few dollars, and they'll definitely help you update your kitchen. And whats not to love about new hardware on your cabinet doors? Just make sure you replace your old knobs with new knobs, instead of trying to replace them with handles; or vice-versa.
As you're in the process of replacing the handles or knobs on your cabinet doors, be sure and stop by the local flea markets and bargain stores before you head down to the big retailers. If you buy someone else's old handles, you'll easily save a few bucks, and then you can just clean them up to look as good as new. There's probably nothing wrong with them; the owner probably just no longer liked them. But that doesn't mean they wont look great in your kitchen!
You should also think about repainting or re-staining the doors, which is also a great way to update your cabinets. All you have to do is sand off the old paint or stain and apply a fresh coat. When you do the doors, however, don't forget to do the fronts of the cabinets themselves so that they match. Obviously this option is going to take a bit more time and work, but the results that you'll enjoy will be just as satisfying as buying completely new cabinets.
If you don't want to put in the time or effort to re-paint or re-stain, you might think about just replacing the doors of the cabinets. Look for doors that match the style and paint/stain of your current cabinets, but with a newer, updated look. When it comes down to it, the look of your cabinets is almost totally based on the doors themselves, not the entire cabinet; replacing just the doors is an excellent way to clean up your kitchen without spending the cash to do the entire cabinets.
Anyone who's looked into updating or remodeling a kitchen knows that it can be surprisingly expensive; so don't waste your money where you don't have to. You can easily update your cabinets with a bit of work and a much smaller budget. You could even hire someone to build you some new cabinet doors for half the price or less than the price of full new cabinets. Plus, your current cabinets themselves are probably in great condition, so why should you replace something that isn't broken? Create a whole new kitchen just by updating or replacing your cabinet doors.
