Kitchen Sinks: A Quick Look
Kitchen sinks come in all different styles and colors and shapes. The practical uses cannot be denied, but now they also are attractive as well. With the variety of materials that are used in their manufacture, some style innovations are available to the buyer who wants something different for the kitchen.
Major Construction Features
The importance of a sink in every kitchen cannot be disputed. Virtually every working kitchen has at least one sink, many have two or even three sinks. Sinks are used for cleaning and preparation of foods. They are also important for cleaning dishes and utensils. The number and types of sinks will depend upon the use that is planned for the kitchen space. Variations in the shape and size will depend on what functions are to be performed in a particular sink.
Sinks placed in kitchens are usually square or rectangular, but less often they are oval or irregular in shape. The fittings cam be made of stainless steel, sometimes with chrome platting. More exotic materials are available, but are much less common. The sinks are formed of metals including stainless steel or sometimes iron. Man made made materials such as Formica or granite sinks are sometimes possible to find. The sink may be formed in one unit with no separation from the counter itself, or may be placed in an opening formed in the counter.
Sink Design
A single bowl sink works well when it is used mainly for hand washing dishes and food preparation utensils before placing them in a dishwasher. The dishwasher is placed under the counter and the sink is placed on the counter near to the dishwasher. This option is good when kitchen space is limited.
A double sink is also good for hand dish washing. Dishwater can be placed in one side and rinse water in the second sink. Sometimes food is washed and trimmed in one sink and dishes are placed in the other sink. Where there are multiple sinks, one may be attached to a garbage disposal. The sink bowls are not necessarily the same size. If many large utensils must be washed, a large deep sink bowl is very convenient.
Small sized sinks are sometimes used for kitchen duties in places other than a kitchen. They originally were called prep sinks and might be used for vegetable preparation. They are an excellent size for a bar or for an entertainment center. They might be more decorative since they are likely to be more on display that standard duty sinks. They might be made of materials such as ceramics or glass.
Choosing Sink Fittings
The important thing to remember about fittings for sinks is that they must be suited to the type of use that will be made of the sink. If you need a fitting that will be used to fill large containers, a high rise faucets might be appropriate. A faucet that has a single control for temperature can be operated with just one hand. Some faucets operate with a touch, rather than a twist of faucets or lifting a lever. Sink fittings may include spray nozzles as well as a standard tap.
Planning your kitchen for a major remodeling is a challenge that is made easier by the number of kitchen sinks that are available. Determine the functions that are to be performed in and around the sink and choose the sink accordingly. Don't forget to plan for beauty as well as functionality.
Kitchen sinks come in endless selections styles and colors and shapes. The practical uses cannot be argued, but now a kitchen sink can also be so attractive.
