Toaster Ovens - Addicted to Toast

Toasts are my addiction. There are 88% percent of American homes with toasters and 75 million people who eat toast every day. I am just one of them. The English have been fervently involved with "Tost", as what they call it, and have a long history on it. A bread put over an open fire or placed above a hot stone was how toast was made in the Middle Ages. It did not break in to pieces so it was used to soak up stew or soup. They in fact called it 'sops' which means pieces of toasted bread. Toasts were commonly topped with honey, cinnamon, ginger, sugar or raisins rather than being bare. The first toast topped with cinnamon paste, sugar and wine was made around the 17th century. It is certainly my husband's favorite, minus the wine! The tradition of toasts by the English people was introduced in America when they inhabited this place and still remains a favorite up to now.Towards the end of the 16th century, a variety of toppings began showing up on toasted breads. The usual favorites were eggs, cheese, meat and occasionally rosewater.

The original notion of toast is ascribed to the Egyptians, 6,000 years back. The sun's heat, as they observed, can bake their bread, yet the parched desert air dehydrated and rendered the toast tasteless. For that reason, preservation was made through toasting and the concept spread all over Europe by the Romans. In the long run wire frames in fireplaces were used for toasting bread until the discovery of electricity came along, creating the first toasters in the early 1900's.

Whenever I'm starving, the first thing I desire is toast. I don't know why I love crusty bread and real butter so much. That was a real delight when we were still young. My grandmother bakes her bread, formulates her own jelly and butter. She made thick slices of the bread, toasted them, applied butter and a big serving of jelly. It was definitely a treat.

There are several magnificent toasters in the market today, a few are built with an oven. You can find toasters that can accommodate four slices of bread at the same time. It seems that our toaster and toaster oven are the busiest of all kitchen appliances. One thing we love in our toaster oven is to place sliced tomatoes on a baking sheet. On top, we add a little bit of salt and pepper, fresh basil, grated parmesan cheese and a drop of olive oil. We broil them as soon as all the cheese have melted and looks delicious.Or, we like to put some nice provolone cheese on bread, top with tomatoes and salt and pepper, broil and eat them like an open-face grilled cheese and tomato sandwich. You can make thousands of recipes for toasts and these high-tech appliances make it quick and simple to prepare or add to a meal.

They made songs about toasts, collectibles and even a bible. I also read of a toaster that tracks your toast with the daily weather forecast through the internet.

But for me, I will just stick with my grandmother's recipe, thick toasted crusty bread, real butter and muscadine jelly. It's the best.
