The Different Versions of Waffles
Waffles are a popular treat for breakfast or desert. There are many different types of waffles that have an extensive history and that originated in different countries across the world. The look, taste and texture varies according to each different type. This article will tell you a little bit about each of them.
You could consider that a waffle is a hybrid of a pancake and a cake. Like a pancake they are made from a batter which typically consists of flour, water, eggs and baking power. While this is the standard recipe it will vary depending on the type of waffle that is being made. They are cooked in a special appliance called a waffle maker that has two hot plates.
This type of food is very old with the recipe dating back to the middle ages. Back then they were called 'wafers' and they were cakes that were cooked between an iron that was placed over a wood fire. They were sold on the streets of medieval cities.
Americans were first introduced to this type of cake when pilgrims from Holland brought their recipe with them in 1620. Like most things, the Americans changed to recipe to match their sweet tooth and inow in modern times you can find them virtually all across the country.
The middle ages tradition of waffles still exists in Europe today. The most famous of these cakes is called the Belgian waffle. It differs to the American version by being larger, crustier and thicker. It is well known for its large pockets which can hold large amounts of syrup and butter.
While these are the two most famous types, other countries still proudly make and sell their own versions. Take the Hong Kong waffle for example. This is a large cake with a distinctive grid like pattern and is sold hot as a snack on the streets. In the Netherlands, stroopwafels have been sold since the 18th century and are different to other versions by having two pieces which are glued together by the sticky filling.
Making a waffle is easier than you think. You first need to find the right recipe and you can search for these on the internet or in a good cook book that you can buy from your local book store. One of the great things about this meal is that you can be creative by adding and changing things to see what works best.
Once you have found recipe the next thing you need is a waffle maker which cooks the batter. You will find many different types and brands for sale at your local department store or on the internet. You will want one that is from a trusted brand and that is of high quality. It is also a good idea to buy one that is easy to clean as the batter can often make a large mess.
